Pathways to Space 2024
providing inspiration and information on space careers in New Zealand to high school and tertiary students at in-person events showcasing women role models working in Aotearoa’s Space Sector
The Women in Space Aotearoa New Zealand (WISANZ) team is currently developing plans for our 2024 Pathways to Space events - watch this ‘space’ for updates later in 2024.
Pathways to Space events are a great opportunity for students who are excited about space, or even just a bit curious – as well as their supporting whanau or friends - to learn more about space career opportunities in Aotearoa New Zealand.
At Pathways to Space events, students learnt about the types of jobs and careers in the New Zealand space sector - across space science and space industry – and the types of training or study courses they could undertake in Aotearoa to help them get their dream space job. They hear about ‘a day in the life’ of women role models working in a range of different space jobs in New Zealand and have an opportunity to ask them any questions about what they do and their different pathways to get there in small discussion groups and informal one on one chats over some pretty delicious afternoon snacks.
Pathways to Space events are open to all high school and tertiary students and supporting whanau or friends.
WISANZ is looking forward to building on the phenomenal success of our inaugural 2022 Pathways to Space events to provide even more students in Aotearoa New Zealand the opportunity to be inspired by and learn from our incredible women space mentors in 2024.

WISANZ were incredibly pleased to bring our inaugural Pathways to Space event series to high school and tertiary students in 2022 – providing inspiration and information on space careers in New Zealand at events in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington in October and November 2022.

WISANZ was blown away by the positive response from students and whanau at each of the 2022 Pathways to Space events – and incredibly humbled by the time and energy donated by our amazing mentors to share their experience and advice with our young attendees.
When the WISANZ team first discussed the idea of Pathways to Space, we thought that if we managed to inspire even one young woman to study towards a space career at each event, the initiative would be a success.
Following feedback we’ve received from three events in three cities reaching 177 attendees we are confident that the visibility of, and engagement with, women space role models has inspired a significant number of young women (and some young men!) to study towards a career in Aotearoa New Zealand’s space sector.
Feedback from students at 2022 Pathways to Space events:
“Thanks for hosting an inspiring and informative event, it seriously helped me know what’s out there and talk to people with similar interests as me which is cool 🔭🪐🛸 It also helped me know what to aspire to and what those sort of people that excel in space careers look like and the qualities they have, and that there is a network out there for getting into space careers.”
“Would you consider coming into high schools for similar workshops/presentations? This would provide much more exposure to you guys and your organisation if you came directly to schools.. your workshop helped me decide my pathway so I think it would be very beneficial if you could go to secondary schools.”
“Excellent event! Gave me lots more knowledge about the local opportunities that are available in NZ. I would suggest potentially more Uni course-directed information for High School students as I believe lots of the information was saying how many options there are in this field, however, as a student considering Uni, some more specific comparison between options might be nice.”
